Helicopter Training Student of the Month: Deanna McDuffie

Mauna LoaStudent of the Month

Helicopter training is no easy task, and our students (like Deanna McDuffie) work very hard to achieve their goals for a successful career in aviation. Whether it’s a new student just starting out their helicopter training, or a seasoned pilot in training finishing up the professional pilot program, we enjoy sharing their progress along the way.

It’s also very important that we recognize students who set the bar for student pilot work ethic and performance. And to be quite honest, it’s often difficult to choose just one!

Last month we chose Deanna McDuffie as our Helicopter Training Student of the Month for January! We took the time to interview Deanna to get her story, and allow you all to get to know her as well – congratulations Deanna! Keep up all the great work!

Name?
Deanna McDuffie.

Age?
25

Current ratings?
Student pilot going for my Private Pilot’s License.

Where are you from?
Born and raised in Georgia but I also lived in North Dakota for 5 years, so that’s home too.

What point in your life did you know you wanted to fly helicopters?
It’s always been in the back of my mind. I survived a bad car accident when I was very young partly due to an air ambulance. I kind of just want to pay it forward.

Where do you hope your training will take you?
I hope to get into something with EMS or Fire. I want to do something where I’m helping people.

What has been your favorite experience while flying with Mauna Loa Helicopters?
Seeing the whales while flying!

How did you pick Mauna Loa Helicopters?
When I called to ask questions about the training and what not, Kelly was just so friendly and welcoming. She answered all of my questions and made me feel like an actual person instead of just another student the school was trying to bring in to make money off of. That and the fact that it’s in Hawaii pretty much sealed the deal for me.

What’s your favorite thing about flying in Hawaii at Mauna Loa Helicopters?
Pretty much everything. All the staff and students are like one big family, there’s always someone for you to talk to. Everyone is treated right, we work hard and we have a good time. That and the weather is nice year round!
