Beatrice Koch (Switzerland) talks about her Mauna Loa experience: "My training at Mauna Loa Helicopter Flight Schools was an awesome experience! I came here from Switzerland without any knowledge about flying at all, and I wasn't really sure if I would be able to make it. But now I got my private pilot's license, I still can't believe it!!!"

Mauna Loa Helicopters Launches Night Vision Goggle Training Program

Mauna Loa Helicopters, in association with Night Flight Concepts (NFC), has launched a night vision goggle (NVG) training program. The Mauna Loa NVG course provides in-depth academic curriculum and operational flight training in order to increase safety, situational awareness and mission operation capabilities during night flight.

This FAA 141 approved training course encompass the most up-to-date technology, information, techniques and procedures for implementing NVGs in new or pre-existing aviation programs. The four-day NVG course, designed to address the requirements of law enforcement agencies, air medical/rescue services, military organizations, and government task force agencies, comprises 16 hours of ground school and six hours of NVG flight training, with a total cost of $8,000.

Initial training of Mauna Loa’s flight instructors took place over a ten day period earlier this year.  Flight training was conducted by Adam Aldous, NFC president, using the Robinson R-44.

“The MLH instructor pilots did exceptionally well during their training,” said Aldous. “NFC is proud to be associated with Mauna Loa Helicopters as an alignment partner supporting NVG training programs.”  Ben Fouts, owner of Mauna Loa Helicopters, said, “We are proud to be affiliated with Night Flight Concepts for our NVG training programs. The new training program expands the menu of services offered by Mauna Loa Helicopters to its client base.”

In addition to the NVG pilot training, NFC completed an STC cockpit lighting installation of a Robinson R-44 helicopter. “The R-44 provides a fantastic NVG platform due to its relatively unlimited viewing area or Field-of-Regard,” stated Randy Rowles, NFC chief flight instructor. “It’s fast, and does quite well with all of the environmental opportunities available in Hawaii.”

Night Flight Concepts is a comprehensive night vision technology (NVT) provider specializing in NVG pilot and crewmember flight training, NVG service & maintenance repair, NVG maintenance technician training, and night vision program support.
